NOVA Main Breaker Tripped Troubleshooting Steps


If this is a brand new machine that you had an electrician install a new 20amp outlet and you are now having power issues. Please verify with your electrician that they did not install a 220v feeder to the receptacle. Thunder Laser Main Power Requirements. The 220v will blow the 36V Power supply, the main contactor and the LPSU. A power surge will blow the 24V Power supply as well.


If the main breaker has tripped in the laser then the reason will need to be determined. The steps listed in this guide should be done in order as the progress through them relies on the end state of the previous step.

Your main breaker has tripped and looks like this:
Blue switch part is in the down position, green indicator is showing.


 

Pre-checks

Pre-Check Step 1: Breaker in machine trips immediately without even turning the main power switch on

Check that your Electrical Filters are wired correctly.


Pre-Check Step 2: 24V Power Supply Wiring

Unplug the machine from the wall and check the 24v Power Supply connections:

Pre-Check Step 3: Check the Main Power Cord and connection

Unplug the machine from the wall and check the main connections:

Pre-Check Step 4: Inspect the Main Contactor

Check the main contactor for function and wiring

Checkout Process:

If nothing is found there, lest test each peripheral in order, do not deviate until the point of cause is found:

 

Start by:

Turn both switches off (main and laser)






Unplug the machine from the wall outlet and then Reset the main breaker by flipping the blue lever up




Unplug the fan, Air Assist pump from the back of the machine





Turn the chiller off at the chiller but leave the chiller plugged in


 









Step 1: Test the Main Machine

Plug the machine in at the back and into the wall outlet.



Turn on Main Power switch.




If the breaker trips, the Main Power Feed, Drivers, 36V Drive Power Supply or the Main 24V DC power supply is suspect. Please stop troubleshooting and report this information to the support team at Support@thunderlaserusa.com



If the breaker doesn't trip,go to the next step.

 

Step 2: Test the LPSU

Turn on the Laser Power switch.




If the breaker trips, the LPSU is suspect. Please send this information back to support@thunderlaserusa.com

If the breaker doesn't trip, go to the next step.

 

Step 3: Test the Chiller

Turn the chiller on, let it run for a cycle of compressor starting, cooling and pumping if possible. This will depend on the water temperature.

If the breaker trips, the chiller is suspect. Please send this information back to support@thunderlaserusa.com

If the breaker doesn't trip, go to the next step.

 

Step 4: Test the Air Assist Pump and Relays\Solenoids

Plug the air assist pump back in to the back of the machine


Press the green "high air assist" button, wait until it shuts off. Listen for and verify that the pump ran.


Press the green "low air assist" button, wait until it shuts off. Listen for and verify that the pump ran.





If the breaker trips, the pump, relay or solenoid are suspect.


Step 4A: Solenoid or Relays for Air Assist


Reset the Main Breaker, unplug the Air Assist Pump from the back of the machine and retest.
Press the High and then Low Air assist buttons like before and record if the breaker trips and when. If it did not trip with the Air Assist Pump Unplugged, then the relay and solenoids are not the problem.

If the breaker doesn't trip, stop the job then go to the next step

 

Step 5: Test the Exhaust fan

Plug fan back in into the back of the machine


Open the main glass door and ensure that the door interlocks are not bypassed by you previously(was not instructed to do so in this guide).

Start a job by pressing the Yellow Start/Pause button on the controller screen. The red light, exhaust and air assist will all come on and there will be an audible tone but the laser head should not move and you will see an error message on the screen for "machine protected worked paused".





If the fan ramps up, wait about 2 minutes then stop the job by pressing "ESC"


If the breaker tripped ,the fan is suspect. Please send this information back to support@thunderlaserusa.com
